Borobudur temple would be the main reason of our visit to Central Java, Indonesia. Borobudur temple, or as the locals call it, Candi Borobudur, is one of the biggest and oldest Buddhist temple from 8th and 9th centuries. The temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and honestly, that is a really good thing. To retain this title there are stringent rules to adhere to and this ensures that the site is protected and well maintained.
The temple was very busy during the day, we found that the main stairs going up or down are the busiest. If you would like to enjoy the temple in a slower pace, you could do that by not going directly to the top and enjoy the scenery around the sides. There are more detailed carving around the sides too. Every carving tells a story.
Stupas are built around the temple with statues of Buddha in each stupa. You may notice that some of the Buddha statues have their heads missing. These heads were most likely removed by treasure hunters, colonialists, or just by time itself.
We were really glad that we opted for the Sunset tour. The loud speaker announced when it was time for everyone to leave, but having paid for the Sunset tickets, the announcement signaled that we’re about to get the place to ourselves.
